Gaming is a fancy name given to the olden day video games, that the privileged kids used to play on their elders’ smart phones. However, now the trend has changed. Almost everyone can afford a PC or even a Smartphone, and they’ve changed the name of video games to “Gaming“.

It is an excellent source of entertainment and also a potential hobby for many, but can you actually go beyond that? At some point, does this “hobby” turn into addiction?

Yes, just like how we have addiction to drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, online gaming addiction is also a severe issue that is growing at an alarming rate in today’s world. One good news is even though gaming has been around for almost 50 years now, the effects of gaming are still fresh and new, so much that there are still studies conducted to figure of if the symptoms fall under the category of addiction.

Red Flags to watch out for

Like any other addiction, gaming addiction also have some red flags in the initial stages to watch out for! Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Thinking about gaming 24×7
  • The urge to play even when circumstances do not favour it
  • The urge to spend money and time only on gaming online or offline
  • Using gaming as an excuse to escape from real-world problems
  • Avoiding family, friends and parties

Gaming also has a drastic impact on the physical behaviour of a person

  • Fatigue
  • Migraine due to extensive use of Pc or mobile
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome due to prolong usage of controller and computer mouse
  • Poor personal hygiene

The symptoms mentioned above can be seen in the early stages of addiction; however, if the problems get too intense, then you can see some adverse effects due to these signs. In worst cases, it might even lead to depression, anxiety and even heart problems in extremely severe cases.

Recognizing and getting help

Sometimes, gamers cant see these warning signs themselves. So they have to have a close look at their behaviour and the symptoms, especially if they’re staying alone or have no one to look after them. When your friends or family suggests you cut it and take a step back, then probably it is for your good because you’re falling into the dark hole of gaming addiction.

Treating gaming addiction is equally essential as spotting it. There are therapies centers called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that help people come out of such addictions. In the early stages, it can be cured by cutting bacon gaming and concentrating on other hobbies and activities. However, when things get out of hand, it is essential to contact a medical or a health professional and share your problems with them.

Prevention is better than cure! Hence there are some ways you can prevent gaming addiction:

  • Set time limits every time you play
  • Stay away from gadgets to avoid playing in the night
  • Indulge yourself in other activities and keep yourself busy all the time.
